Google vs Bing AI Visibility Reports: 2026 Metrics & Gaps
Compare Google and Bing AI visibility reports: their units, dimensions, query and citation data, preview limits, and the gaps both leave.
Google and Bing now give site owners first-party visibility into generative search, but they do not measure the same thing.
Google Search Console records an impression when a link to your site is shown in a supported Google generative AI feature. Bing Webmaster Tools records citation activity when your site is displayed as a source across supported Microsoft and partner AI experiences.
An impression is not a citation. A citation is not a visit. Neither one is automatically a brand recommendation.
Short answer: Use Google Search Console to understand where owned pages receive exposure in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Use Bing Webmaster Tools to understand how owned pages are cited, in what retrieval context, and how citation presence changes across Bing's supported AI experiences. The Reports At A Glance
Google announced its dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports on June 3, 2026. The Search report covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode and is rolling out to a subset of website owners.
Microsoft introduced AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools in February 2026. In June, it expanded the preview globally with Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare.

The most important row is the first one. The two products observe different events, so their totals cannot be compared as if they were two versions of the same KPI.
Google Measures Link Exposure Inside Google AI Search
Google defines an impression in this report as a link from your site being shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search. The report can group those impressions by:
- Page.
- Country.
- Date.
- Device.
Google's Search Console help documentation says the Search report currently includes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Search Labs experiments are excluded, and generative AI features in Discover have a separate report.
The unit needs careful interpretation. In the chart, data is aggregated by property. If two results from the same site appear in one generative AI feature, Google says they count as one impression in the property total. When a URL filter is applied, the chart is aggregated by URL. The table aggregation changes with the selected dimension.
This makes Search Console useful for questions such as:
- Which canonical pages receive Google generative AI exposure?
- Is that exposure growing or falling over time?
- Is it concentrated in one country?
- Does the pattern differ by device?
- Which pages deserve a closer content or technical review?
It does not reveal the query in the dedicated report, preserve the generated answer, identify competing brands, or show how the link supported a claim.

Bing Measures Citation Activity And Retrieval Context
Bing AI Performance begins with a different event: a page from your verified site appearing as a cited source in an AI-generated answer across supported experiences.
The initial report includes:
- Total citations.
- Average cited pages per day.
- Sampled grounding queries.
- Page-level citation activity.
- Visibility trends over time.
Microsoft says total citations do not indicate placement or presentation inside a specific answer. Average cited pages describes breadth, not authority, ranking, or a page's role in an answer.
Grounding queries add context that Google's dedicated report does not provide. They are key phrases used during retrieval when cited content was referenced. They are not necessarily the complete words a person typed, and Microsoft says the report shows a sample of overall citation activity.
The expanded preview adds four analysis layers:
- Intents classify grounding queries into broader purposes such as Informational, Commercial, Navigational, Learn and Solve, Research, Creation, and Local.
- Topics group related grounding queries into thematic clusters.
- Citation Share measures the percentage of citations attributed to your site out of all citations shown across all sites for the same grounding query.
- Compare overlays a previous period on the current reporting view.
Citation Share is the closest either report comes to a relative visibility metric, but its name creates a common trap. Microsoft explicitly says it is observational: it is not a ranking, traffic share, content-quality score, or competitor scoreboard, and it does not expose competitor domains.

Why Google Impressions And Bing Citations Are Not Comparable
Suppose a monthly report shows:
- 1,200 Google generative AI impressions.
- 85 Bing citations.
- A 14% Bing Citation Share for one commercial grounding query.
Those numbers do not establish that Google created more AI visibility than Bing. The reports cover different surfaces, use different eligibility rules, aggregate different events, and expose different levels of query context.
The 1,200 Google impressions count site-link exposure under Google's reporting rules. The 85 Bing citations count displayed source citations across Bing's supported and aggregated AI experiences. The 14% share uses all citations for one grounding query as its denominator. None shares a common population with the others.
Keep each provider metric in its native unit:

If stakeholders need one executive summary, show the metrics as separate rows with their definitions and periods. Do not add them together or force them into one blended percentage.
Query Data: Missing In Google, Sampled In Bing
The query distinction is strategically important.
Google's dedicated generative AI report does not list queries among its available dimensions. A page may receive impressions without telling you which buyer question caused the exposure. You can see that a pricing page surfaced, for example, but not whether the context was a category search, a branded comparison, an implementation question, or something else.
Bing exposes grounding queries, then groups them into Intents and Topics. That is more diagnostic, but it still is not a prompt log. A grounding query represents retrieval context used by Bing's systems. It may differ from the original user wording, and the sample is not the complete universe of interactions.
Use the Bing data to discover language and themes worth investigating. Then turn the important themes into a controlled AI search query set made of exact buyer Questions.
That sequence prevents two errors:
- Treating a missing Google query dimension as proof that no important question exists.
- Treating a sampled Bing grounding phrase as the full user prompt and publishing a thin page for every variation.
What Neither Report Can Prove
Both reports add valuable first-party evidence. Neither is a complete answer-observation system.
Neither Shows The Full Answer
A page impression or citation does not tell you what the answer said about the brand. The answer may recommend your product, list it neutrally, use your page only to support a category definition, or cite your research while recommending a competitor.
Without the answer text, you cannot reliably classify mention quality, recommendation strength, objections, factual errors, or the claim connected to a source.
Neither Provides Named Competitor Evidence
Google's report is scoped to your verified site. Bing's Citation Share compares your site's citation presence with the full citation set for a grounding query, but Microsoft says the metric does not expose competitor domains.
To answer "Which competitors appeared, and how were they framed?" you need to observe the generated answer for a controlled Question.
Neither Measures Every Channel
Google's report describes Google Search features. Bing's report describes supported Microsoft and select partner experiences. Neither is a view of ChatGPT, Perplexity, or every other answer engine your buyers may use.
Provider totals also should not be treated as a census of the entire AI web. Their coverage and availability can change as previews evolve.
Neither Establishes Causality
A content update followed by higher impressions or citations is a useful observation, not proof that the edit caused the increase. Demand, seasonality, source freshness, model changes, retrieval changes, competing content, supported-surface coverage, and ordinary variation can move at the same time.

Neither Measures Business Outcomes
An impression or citation can create no click. A buyer can also see a brand, return later through branded search, or navigate directly without an identifiable AI referral.

The reports become more useful when each is assigned a specific job.

Each layer has a different denominator. Connect them at the page, topic, market, and time-period level without pretending there is perfect one-to-one attribution.

A Practical Google-And-Bing Workflow
Use the reports together without flattening their differences.
1. Record The Measurement Contract
For every reporting period, record:
- Property and verified domain.
- Date range and timezone.
- Report availability and preview status.
- Native metric name and definition.
- Selected filters and dimensions.
- Known site releases, migrations, indexing events, or access-control changes.
If the Google report is missing, do not record zero impressions. Google says access is still rolling out, and a property may also lack sufficient impressions. "Report unavailable" and "zero measured exposure" are different states.
2. Review Google Exposure By Page And Market
Find pages with growing, falling, or unexpectedly absent generative AI impressions. Segment by country and device where those differences affect the business.
Treat the result as a page-discovery queue, not an automatic rewrite list. Check canonical URLs, indexability, internal links, content accuracy, and the page's real job before changing copy.
3. Review Bing Citation Context
Inspect cited URLs beside total citations, grounding queries, Intents, Topics, and Citation Share. Keep raw counts beside percentages so a small denominator is not mistaken for scale.
Flag strategically important commercial or problem-solving contexts, surprising cited pages, and citation trends that persist across comparable periods.
4. Convert Patterns Into Stable Questions
Turn the highest-value patterns into exact buyer Questions. Separate unbranded discovery, branded evaluation, competitor comparisons, pricing, integrations, security, proof, and implementation.
Create one AEO Table Task with a stable brand definition, competitor set, channel selection, market, language, and Question wording. Changing those fields changes the instrument.
5. Inspect Answer Evidence Across Runs
Run the same Task on a consistent cadence. For each Run, inspect:
- The full answer text.
- Brand and competitor mentions.
- Owned and third-party citations.
- Answer framing and factual accuracy.
- Provider channel, market, and language.
- Failures or missing evidence.
Do not expect the Task totals to match either webmaster report. The question set and observed surfaces are deliberately controlled, while provider reports aggregate their own supported activity.
6. Choose One Page-Level Action
Translate the combined evidence into a specific change.

7. Compare Matched Periods And Matched Runs
Use the same period length for provider trends and retain methodology notes. For prompt monitoring, compare Runs from the same Task definition. Annotate content releases and technical changes, then look for repeated movement across more than one evidence layer.
Describe a relationship as correlation until stronger evidence supports a causal claim.
Which Report Should You Use?
Use Google Search Console when the decision is about owned-page exposure in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, including page, country, device, and time patterns.
Use Bing Webmaster Tools when the decision is about owned-page citation activity across supported Microsoft AI experiences, especially retrieval context, Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and period comparison.
Use both when Google and Microsoft matter to your acquisition strategy. Keep the native metrics separate and use page or topic alignment for directional comparison.
Use prompt-level monitoring when the decision depends on the answer itself: whether the brand appeared, which competitor was recommended, what source supported the claim, or whether the same buyer Question behaves differently across channels.
Use GA4 and business systems when the decision is about visits, conversions, pipeline, activation, or revenue.
Common Reporting Mistakes
Do not compare Google impression totals with Bing citation totals as channel share.
Do not rename a Google AI impression as a brand mention or an owned citation.
Do not treat Bing grounding queries as complete user-prompt transcripts.
Do not call Citation Share traffic share, ranking position, competitor share of voice, or market share.
Do not record a missing preview report as zero visibility.
Do not infer a content-update win from one before-and-after chart without checking matched periods, answer evidence, and other plausible causes.
Do not use either webmaster report as a substitute for post-click analytics or business outcomes.
