Metrics glossary

AEO metrics glossary for AI visibility reports

Use these definitions to keep teams aligned when reviewing Tasks, Runs, reports, citations, competitors, and visibility score movement.

How to use this glossary

Definitions are product-aligned but intentionally evidence-first. Use them when writing reports, planning prompt sets, comparing competitors, or explaining why a visibility score moved.

  • Use Task, Run, report, credits, citations, competitors, and Questions in user-facing copy.
  • Avoid internal storage names in public copy when a product-facing term exists.
  • Link glossary terms back to methodology pages or feature pages when the user needs the full workflow.

Metrics should stay tied to evidence

A metric is useful when the team can inspect the answer, source, channel, and Run that produced it. If the evidence cannot be reviewed, soften the claim or remove it.

  • Pair scores with mentions, citations, and competitor context.
  • Label sample/demo values when publishing a report outside the product.
  • Separate AEO Table positioning from external search engine behavior.

Where definitions connect to workflow

Glossary terms should help a reader move from definition to action. Link a term to the methodology page when the reader needs measurement logic, to the sample report when the reader needs format, and to a feature page when the reader needs the product view.

  • Use the measurement methodology for Task, Run, prompt set, visibility score, and channel breakdown context.
  • Use the citation methodology for citation, mention, source evidence, and competitor citation gap context.
  • Use the sample report for executive summary, competitor snapshot, and next-action examples.

Glossary

Core AEO metrics and product terms

AI visibility

The observable presence of a brand, competitor, or source in AI-generated or AI-assisted answers for a defined prompt set.

Answer-engine visibility

A broader term for how often and how clearly answer systems mention, cite, or compare a brand before a website click exists.

Citation

A source URL or domain returned as evidence with an answer. A citation can be owned, earned, partner, third-party, or competitor evidence.

Mention

A brand or competitor name appearing in the answer text. A mention may or may not include a citation.

Competitor appearance

A named alternative appearing in the same answer context as the tracked brand or query.

Visibility score

A directional summary of answer evidence from a Run. It should be reviewed beside the underlying answers and citations.

Channel breakdown

A report view that separates evidence by selected channel, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, or Perplexity.

Source evidence

The source URLs, domains, snippets, or links that support an answer and help explain why a brand or competitor appeared.

Task

The product-facing monitoring configuration for a brand, market, language, selected channels, competitors, and buyer Questions.

Run

One execution of a Task across selected channels. Runs consume credits and preserve answer evidence for review.

Report

A shareable evidence artifact that summarizes a Run with answer text, citations, competitors, channel breakdowns, and recommendations.

Prompt/query set

The buyer Questions used to measure visibility. Keeping the set stable makes reports easier to compare over time.
