AI citation tracking methodology for evidence review

Use this page to reason about citations as inspectable source evidence rather than as a promise that any answer engine will choose a specific page.

Cited is not the same as mentioned

A mention is a text appearance in the answer. A citation is source evidence returned with or attached to that answer. The two should be reviewed together because either one can appear without the other.

  • Treat brand mentions as answer visibility signals.
  • Treat citations as source evidence that may explain or support the answer.
  • Review snippets, URLs, and domains before deciding whether the evidence is useful.

Classify source evidence

The first pass should classify source ownership. This prevents teams from mixing proof they control with third-party proof they influence only indirectly.

Owned source

Brand site, docs, blog, pricing, support

Useful when the answer needs current product or pricing facts.

Earned source

Review, analyst, partner, community, press

Useful when the answer needs independent category context.

Competitor source

Alternative site or comparison page

Useful for finding source gaps and competitor framing.

Low-fit source

Outdated or thin page

Useful as a cleanup candidate, not as proof of visibility quality.

Account for variance

Citation behavior can differ by query wording, channel, freshness, geography, and whether the answer system returns source links at all. A citation review should preserve the Run context that produced the evidence.

  • Compare sources within the same Task before generalizing across channels.
  • Look for repeated domains across multiple buyer Questions before prioritizing source work.
  • Use evidence review to decide which owned pages, comparison pages, or proof assets to improve.
