Measurement methodology

AI visibility measurement methodology for repeatable answer evidence

Use this framework to separate measurable answer-engine signals from unsupported claims about how any model or search system will behave in the future.

What AEO Table measures

The methodology starts with answer evidence, not a generic ranking proxy. Each measurement should keep the query set, market, language, competitors, and selected channels stable enough to compare one Run with the next.

Prompts and Questions

Buyer-intent query set

Use questions that a real buyer, analyst, or evaluator would ask.

Selected channels

ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Perplexity

Measure only the channels selected and eligible for the Run.

Brand mentions

Included, absent, or ambiguous

Review answer context before treating a mention as positive evidence.

Citations

Source URLs and domains

Inspect whether owned, earned, partner, or competitor sources support the answer.

Competitor appearances

Named alternatives in the same answer

Compare competitors within the same question and channel context.

Visibility score

Directional summary

Use the score beside the underlying evidence, not as a standalone truth.

What no tool can promise

Measurement can show what happened in a preserved Run. It cannot force a future answer, citation, ranking, snippet, crawler visit, or AI Overview inclusion.

  • Model outputs and search features vary by channel, query, location, freshness, eligibility, and retrieval context.
  • A page can follow technical and content best practices and still not be crawled, indexed, served, cited, or included by a search system.
  • AEO Table reports should be used as decision support for source and content work, not as proof of future placement.

How to make Runs comparable

A repeatable Task keeps the input side controlled. Teams should only interpret movement after checking whether the questions, competitors, selected channels, market, language, or source pages changed.

  • Keep a baseline Task before a launch, homepage rewrite, comparison-page update, or documentation refresh.
  • Review channel-by-channel evidence before summarizing a trend across all AI search surfaces.
  • Annotate material changes so a later report can explain why the evidence changed.
